Quick Summary

During our shuttle season, Olympic Hiking Co. offers a daily 1:30 PM group trailhead shuttle from the Ozette trailhead to the Shi Shi Beach trailhead for backpackers hiking the North Olympic Wilderness Coast. Tide permitting, we recommend parking at the Ozette trailhead by 1:00 PM for our 1:15 PM check-in, and then catching the 1:30 PM shuttle to Shi Shi at the start of your trip. This allows you to hike back to your vehicle at Ozette at your own pace. If the 1:30 PM timing does not work, we have custom shuttles available upon request.

Important Details

Check your tides before you book!

Following tide schedules is critical for backpacking the Olympic Wilderness Coast. Certain sections may be impassable for hours or even days as the tide schedule changes daily. For quick reference, here is a basic tide schedule:

Other Details

  • If you have any questions about your backpacking trip, please contact the Olympic National Park Wilderness Information Center at (360) 565-3100 or by email OLYM_WIC@nps.gov.

  • We purchase a Makah Recreation Pass for all of our shuttle vehicles each year. You will only need a Makah Recreation Pass if parking a vehicle on the Makah reservation in Neah Bay.

  • Advanced online reservations required, which close 24 hours prior to departure time. No walk-up reservations.

  • Tides permitting, we recommend booking our trailhead shuttle at the beginning of your trip, as it is much easier to coordinate versus managing a hiking exit date and time.

  • Solo passenger? To cover our daily cost of labor, fuel, and insurance, we require a $180 minimum booking to open a new shuttle reservation. Accordingly, for the first booking for a particular shuttle route, a solo hiker will need to book 2 tickets to start a new reservation. If other passengers join your shuttle, you can email us after the trip and we will refund you the individual ticket. When you finish the online booking, please type in “solo hiker” in the reservation comments, as this is helpful for us in managing headcounts.

Additional Information

This trailhead shuttle provides transportation for backpackers from the Ozette Ranger Station in Olympic National Park to the Shi Shi Beach trailhead on the Makah Reservation in Neah Bay, WA. It is roughly a 1 hour 15 minute drive. Our passenger check-in will be at the Ozette backpackers parking lot, which is just past the Ozette Ranger Station and is both a day-use lot and multi-night backpackers lot. Please arrive early as the parking lot can typically be full during the busier summer months. It is highly recommended to book this 1:30 PM shuttle from Ozette to Shi Shi at the beginning of your trip, allowing you to hike back to your vehicle at Ozette. There is no overnight parking at the Shi Shi trailhead, only a paid private lot one mile away from the trailhead, so if you do park at a private lot near Shi Shi and hike to Ozette, let our driver know upon pick-up at Ozette. In general, we recommend to backpackers to arrange the shuttle at the beginning of the trip if possible, so you don’t have to stress about timing an exact exit date and time during your hiking trip, especially with the tide schedules. A very nice feeling knowing you have your car ready for you whenever you are!

If you prefer to hike south to north from Ozette to Shi Shi, we recommend parking at the Ozette Ranger Station at the beginning of your trip, completing the hike, and then catching our 3:00 PM Shi Shi to Ozette shuttle at the end of your hike due to the parking limitations near the Shi Shi trailhead and avoiding daily parking fees.
